~U. S. highways 301 and 601 go through the Main Street, and through the long one-block area of the historic old commercial
area in which Main Street Market is located. U.S. highway 78 intersects with these main roads at the eastern end of the block.
Bamberg County, of which the town is the county seat, is temperate and possesses a great natural beauty. This area is on the
southern Coastal Plain, the gateway to the celebrated South Carolina lowcountry. The south branch of the Edisto, a pristine
blackwater river, creates the eastern boundary of the county, and provides for excellent fishing and other recreation. The
county abounds in beautiful forests, wildflowers, and an exceptional assortment of song and water birds such as the Great Blue
Heron, White Egret, and Painted Bunting. This is hunt country where deer and other game abound.
~A few miles south of Bamberg on highway 78 one sees the beautiful brick entrance walls and the remains of a wrought iron
gate which led to the original house at Woodlands Plantation, the home of esteemed South Carolinian, William Gilmore
Simms, an internationally acclaimed author. The original house burned mysteriously right after the War Between the States.
When his black overseer was accused of the crime, Simms famously returned to the area to testify on the man's behalf. The
Simms family rebuilt upon the foundations, and still retain the later house and the surrounding property.
~Highways 601 and 301 south diverge on the western side of Bamberg. Several miles out of town in that direction between
those highways, and across Lemon Creek, is Rivers Bridge State Park, the only state park in South Carolina established at a
Civil War battle site. At this place on Feb 2 and 3, 1865, a vastly outnumbered Confederate force attempted to stop the
advance of General Sherman's forces into the interior of the State. A lady of the Valentine family who lived nearby as a child
had gone with her family to the area directly after the battle to assist the wounded. She told her grandchildren that "the bodies
were stacked like cord wood and the river ran red with blood." The Little Salkehatchie River flows thru the Park. Existing
earthworks from the battle and a small museum on the site make Rivers Bridge State Park a must-visit destination for anyone
interested in American history and particularly for Civil War enthusiasts.
~Bamberg is a lovely and pleasant historic town in a beautiful and very interesting area. We hope that you will visit us
soon....We invite you to stop by Main Street Market in the historic downtown area while you are here.
